Clients frequently inquire about how I can assist them in coping with the challenges that arise following a car accident, particularly when they are experiencing physical pain, anxiety related to driving or being a pedestrian, and emotional turmoil as they navigate ICBC's support and reimbursement processes. My approach consists of three key components
Stabilization and Resource Awareness
First, I aim to help clients achieve a sense of stability by informing them about the services available through their ICBC claims apart from the ICBC-Covered Counselling. I also encourage them to utilize community resources. In instances where clients may not have a strong relationship with their ICBC adjuster, I advise them to express their concerns through the ICBC complaint process.
Coping Strategies for Emotional Distress
Second, I provide clients with immediate tools and coping strategies to alleviate emotional distress. Many of these strategies are derived from Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness, and Guided Imagery Relaxation techniques. Additionally, I work with clients to ensure they are prioritizing self-care, focusing on aspects such as sleep hygiene, nutritional habits, and maintaining a healthy balance between rest and rehabilitation activities.
Trauma Therapy Introduction
Third, I introduce trauma therapy modalities, including Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These therapies are designed to help clients overcome fears related to driving and pedestrian experiences. Often, the aftermath of a car accident can trigger deeper feelings of insecurity, and trauma therapy provides the necessary tools to address these underlying issues.
Preliminary Assessment and Ongoing Evaluation for ICBC-Covered counselling
Finally, I conduct a preliminary assessment at the outset of the ICBC counselling process. This assessment allows me to evaluate the need for counselling and monitor progress toward our therapeutic goals. I will report findings to ICBC and request additional sessions if necessary.
